Are you heading out soon for a well-deserved summer break? Before you turn off that laptop and put your phone on ‘do not disturb’ don’t forget to make a list and check it twice to protect yourself from a dental emergency while you’re away with these helpful smile-saving summer vacation tips!
Know Before You Go
Dental emergencies don’t usually care if you’re on vacation. Thus, rather than risk a painful cavity or tooth infection, swing by your dentist’s office for your biannual exam and cleaning before you hit the open road. That way, whether you have a clean bill of health or require some restorative work first, you can enjoy your time off without worrying about your teeth.
Get Packing
Whether you’re a notorious over-packer (no, you probably won’t need six pairs of shoes for a weekend trip), or you always forget something (does anyone have a spare phone charger?) be sure to include all your oral hygiene gear, such as:
- Toothbrush
- Dental floss
- Toothpaste
- Travel-sized mouthwash
- Retainer, mouthguard, bite guard, sleep appliance (if applicable)
- Cleanser for oral appliances (if applicable)
- Storage case for oral appliances (if applicable)
Keep Hydrated
Don’t skip your daily water requirement just because you’re on break; however, if you’re not sure about the safety of the local water supply, stick to drinking bottled water whenever possible, including when brushing your teeth. Furthermore, keep your mouth closed while swimming and showering just in case!
Stay on Track
There’s something about vacation dining. Whether it’s trying a new cuisine or indulging in a travel favorite, it’s important to try to keep your oral hygiene on track no matter what you end up eating. There’s no need to forgo that saltwater taffy or say no to that house-made gnocchi but try to balance out your carbs and sweets with plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins. This will reduce your risk of cavities, gum disease, and unexpected dental emergencies.
Take a Number
Finally, if you’re travelling out of town, don’t forget to store some emergency numbers in your phone, including your dentist. If you’re travelling abroad, save the number of the local consulate or US Embassy at your destination, as they can be extremely helpful in providing referrals for emergency dental and medical assistance.
Remember, your summer vacation should be fun and relaxing, not overshadowed by stress or worry about a dental emergency. Thus, protect your smile by packing smart and addressing any oral health concerns before you head out the door, and have a safe and wonderful trip!
